[...but he does obey, because April's husband got ported out, and that sucks. He offered Mexican food mainly because that's the one takeout he knows that he can get actual decent food instead of his favourite, 100% unauthentic cheap Chinese place.
It's not too long before he knocks on her door, a steaming hot bag of take-out held in one hand. Maybe he won't be there for too long, but at least he's doing something.]
[ Of course he isn't. Dogs are amazing, people for the most part are just okay.
Maybe unsurprisingly considering he's met her, it isn't April that opens the door. Rather a creative raccoon lets him in and immediately starts sniffing at the food.]
Living room.
[ She called from her current position in a progressively elaborate blanket fort on the living room floor. ]
[Perhaps Jaime's met April, but he hasn't met any of her raccoons. When he's greeted with one's furry little face, he rears back, holding the bag of food protectively to his chest with a small, uttered,]
Oh god.
[Aren't raccoons technically vermin?]
Um... hello, [he says, toeing off his shoes - though he's not entirely sure why, since he's pretty sure the animals track in much more dirt than his shoes would - and turning the corner to see her in the pillow fort.]
Does your raccoon usually answer the door for you?
[ Because there are so much more than one, some poking their heads from walkways on the ceiling or around corners to investigate this new food-bearing entity. Along with multiple dogs of course, joining in on this food discovery adventure.
April doesn't do much more than shuffle slightly to the side, the golden retriever in her lap grudgingly going along, to make room for Jaime to join her. Nothing weird about an animal filled house.]
Oh, boy. Yeah, I'm seeing the whole plural thing now.
[He eyes them a little warily before saying, as if they could somehow understand him,] Uh, hey... guys. Girls?
[Well, he's not about to check. It's with a lot more comfort that he leans over to scratch at the nearest dog's ears before walking over to where April's sitting down, and he takes the unspoken invitation to sit down beside her in order to pass over the food. He glances up at the blanket fort above them before saying, a little tentatively,] So, is the whole fort thing a new addition, or...?
[ Her people being adults unable to deal with complicated emotions in a rationale manner, but she doesn't specify out loud. Instead she digs into the food, seeing what sacrifice has been brought to her. ]
[Now that he's sitting down, he takes out one of the boxes and hands it over to April, though he claims the small bag of chips he stowed away in there for himself. He munches on one, swallows, then says,] Just a mechanics course. I'm taking it for work, and I guess Will wants to be able to keep up all his boats for himself.
[He's carefully referring to Will only in the present tense. There comes a time when Jaime does give up hope, but he at least tries to wait it out a few days.]
[Jaime doesn't know April very well. She seems hard to get to know, everything expressed in a bored sounding deadpan, and that's something Jaime just can't seem to figure out.
But he can try to roll with it, which is why he says,] Yep. That's why I'm only eating the chips.
[ Yeah, she is the kind of person that says 'FYI' instead of for your information. Life is hard. But she's more accepting for that answer than anything else he might have said. Well done, JJ.]
